Six Lake Forest players earn all-state honors

GIRLS HOCKEY — Highly populated.
Six players on the girls hockey team at Lake Forest have been named to the 2012 Amateur Hockey Association Illinois (AHAI) All-State Team.
The list includes Lindsay Projansky, Kelsey Patten, Madison Pfalzer, Haley Conroy, Jessica Gould and Bridget Roche.
Lake Forest Academy placed two players on the squad: Natalie Bernstein and Alexandra Deyoung.s
All eight players will compete in the AHAI All-State Game on Monday at 6:40 p.m. at The Edge in Bensenville.
Meanwhile, in boys hockey, three Lake Forest players were named Metro North all-stars. The trio includes seniors Jack Newtown, Antoni Hansdorfer and Joe Losacco.
McGowan heading
to National Team camp
GIRLS SOCCER — Three players from the Eclipse Select Soccer Club, including Highland Park’s Zoe Redei and Lake Forest’s Ginny McGowan, have been called up to the U.S. U-15 National Team for a February camp.
Kayla McCoy of Lincolnwood also got the nod.
Redei will join the 97s/98s pool as a forward.
McGowan, a defender, has been added to the 95s/96s pool.
They will be part of a 48-player camp, which runs from Feb. 11-18 at Sunrise, Fla.
The eight-day session will be headed up U-15 National Team head coach Damon Nahas and U.S. Women’s Development Director Jill Ellis.
Redei’s group is preparing for qualification for the 2014 U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Shipp, Forlow set
to play at next level
BOYS SOCCER — Michael Shipp and Ian Forlow, who helped the Lake Forest boys soccer team to an NSC championship this past fall, have made their college decisions.
Shipp signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday and will join his brother Harrison at Notre Dame.
Shipp, who was selected all-state in the fall, was named to the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-America team, and he was the NSCAA Senior Excellence Award recipient.
He played his club ball with the Chicago Fire Juniors.
Forlow, who is ranked No. 9 in the Midwest by TopDrawersoccer.com, will play at the University of Rochester in New York.
The Yellowjackets, who compete in the University Athletic Conference (Division III), finished 9-5-2 last year.
Blanchard throws TD pass in Players Classic
COLLEGE FOOTBALL — Ex-Lake Zurich quarterback Matt Blanchard had a productive performance in the Players All-Star Classic football game, which was held Saturday in Little Rock, Ark.
Blanchard, a senior at UW-Whitewater, helped the North squad to a 24-19 victory. He tossed a 17-yard TD to Buffalo’s Marcus Rivers with 31 seconds left in the half.
The game featured players who are considered as prospects for the 2012 NFL Draft. A majority of the invitees were from SEC, Big 12, ACC, and Big Ten conferences.
Blanchard led UW-Whitewater to a Division III national title this past season. As a starting QB at the Wisconsin school, he compiled an impressive 25-0 record, throwing for nearly 3.000 yards with 23 TD passes.
Mathewson, Parker
sign letters of intent
FOOTBALL — Two of the stalwart defenders on the Libertyville High School football team will sign national letters of intent.
All-conference defensive end Luke Mathewson will continue his football with Division I North Dakota.
Michael Parker, who also lined up at defensive end and earned all-conference honors, will be playing Division II football at Grand Valley State University.
Both schools have strong football programs. North Dakota, which is switching to the Big Sky Conference, finished 8-3 and were co-champs in the Great West Conference. Grand Valley also ended up with an 8-3 record.
Mathewson (6-foot-4, 230 pounds), who starts on the Wildcats basketball team, finished the season with 43 tackles. He also was credited with 10 QB hurries, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and four recovered fumbles.
Parker also had an extremely productive season for the 5-5 Wildcats, who earned a berth into the state playoffs. The 6-3, 215-pounder led his team with eight quarterback sacks to go along with 53 tackles, six QB hurries and four TFLs.
VHCYAA will host Steve Gregory QB Farm
YOUTH FOOTBALL — The Steve Gregory QB Farm is coming to the area.
These quarterback clinics are being sponsored by the Vernon Hills Cougars Youth Athletic Association (VHCYAA), and they will take place in May, June and July at the VHAC youth football fields.

Elite Basketball Academy starting up this spring
CLUB HOOPS — Kurt Vahle, assistant boys basketball coach at Lake Forest Academy and Director of Youth Athletics at the Lake Barrinton Field House, is starting up a new youth basketball program: Elite Basketball Academy.
The program, which will be open to players in grades 4-11, is being run out of Lake Barrington Field House and Lake Forest Academy.
Tryouts for grades 4-8 will start on Feb. 20 at Lake Barrington. Tryouts for high school boys start on March 10 at Lake Barrington.
