Lake Forest Club’s Morgan will play in Australian Open

TENNIS — Adam Morgan is set to play in the Australian Open.

The Mundelein resident, Racquets Associate at the Lake Forest Club, will be representing the United States in the Kia Amateur Australian Open Tennis Tournament on Jan. 26-29 in Melbourne, Australia.

Morgan will be the U.S. representative in both the men’s tournament and the mixed doubles tournament, competing against representatives from 15 other countries.

Morgan won the Midwest qualifying tournament last summer. Then, in October, he competed in a national tourney and lost a close match in the final. But the winner was disqualified for unspecified reasons. Thus, Morgan advances as the U.S. representative.

This will be Morgan’s second appearance in the Australian Open. In 2007, he finished fourth in men’s singles and fifth in mixed doubles. The U.S. took second overall.

FC United 17s win
Disney Showcase

SOCCER — This team pretty much dominated.

The FC United Select U-17 girls team, which is features a number of players from Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, took care of the national competition at the recent Disney Showcase.

Coached by Craig Snower and Seong Ha, FC United went 4-0 to claim the title. The wins came over teams from Utah, Georgia, New Jersey and Ohio. FC United outscored its opponents 11-1 in the four-game set.

The roster includes Jessica Berman, Corey Burns, April Cronin, Allison Curry, Evan Fencik, Kimberly Greenberg, Cara Gutnayer, Nora Mabie, Madeline McGinnis, Claire Mulert, Monatana Paley, Abby Reed, Amelia Rockhold, Sydney Rumple, Brittany San Roman, Jessica Weave and Allyson Wojick.

Noll takes over women’s volleyball program at LFC

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL — Heather Noll has been hired as the new head women’s volleyball coach at Lake Forest College.

Noll takes over the Foresters, who were 15-14 last season, after being the head coach at Buena Vista University in Iowa for past four seasons. She also was a graduate assistant at UW-Whitewater.

Noll played college volleyball at Indian Hills Community College and Coe College. She was a two-time all-conference selection and team MVP.

Waddle, Eclipse fare
well in Winter Showcase

TRAVEL SOCCER — Near perfect.

The Eclipse Soccer Club’s four Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) turned is stellar performances at the recent Seminole County ECNL Winter Showcase held in Sanford, Fla. Eclipse finished 10-0-2 in 12 high-level games.

Angela Waddle (Lake Forest) was a key scorer for the U-16s, which finished 2-0-1. Waddle scored twice in a 2-1 win over the Dallas Texans. Teammate Carrie Madden (Deer Park) tallied the lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Freestate Alliance.

In U-18s action, Eclipse also finished 2-0-1. In a 4-0 win over McLean YSA (Va.), Abigayle Gearing (Libertyville), Lauren Hall (Hawthorn Woods) and Carly Manson (Vernon Hills) scored goals.

Eclipse’s U-15s and U-17s had a combined 6-0 record.

The next ECNL national event will be held in San Antonio on Feb. 24-25. The National Championship will take place on June 25-30 at the Waukegan Sports Park.

LF’s Lawrence commits
to LaFayette College

BASEBALL — The Prep Baseball Report has reported that Lake Forest senior Matt Lawrence has committed to LaFayette College, which competes in the Patriot League.

The future Leopards player earned all-conference honors for the Scouts last spring. He just missed hitting .400 (.392).

Antonijevic drafted
by Sporting KC

SOCCER — Stevenson grad Stefan Antonijevic was selected in the third round of Tuesday’s Major League Soccer (MSL) Supplemental Draft.

Antonijevic, who was a three-year standout for Valparaiso University, was picked by Sporting Kansas City with the fifth pick of the third round.

“This is a dream come true, especially for me,” noted Antonijevic, in a news release put out by Valparaiso. “My life has been about soccer as long as I can remember, and I’ve been working towards the goal of having the chance to play professionally for a long time.”

This fall, Antonijevic was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year. He anchored a back line, which gave up only 14 goals in 20 games.

Sporting KC, previously known as the Kansas City Wizards, advanced to the MSL Cup semifinals this past season.

Mundelein names Kaider
as its new football coach

FOOTBALL — George Kaider, who was named as the new head football coach at Mundelein High School on Tuesday, certainly is no stranger to football.

Prior to joining the Mustangs staff in 2009, Kaider, a counselor at the school, had been a head coach at Pekin High School (2008) and Richmond-Burton (2000).

Kaider also has been on coaching staffs at McHenry, Lake Zurich and his alma mater, Palatine.
