Hendricks earns academic All-America honor

Carmel alumnus Kevin Hendricks, a senior outfielder for the Benedictine men’s baseball team, was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Second Team. The Mundelein native is a management and organizational behavior major. Early in the season, Hendricks was named to the Academic All-District team. After missing all of last season because of injury, Hendricks bounced back to hit .356 with .428 on-base percentage. He scored 37 runs and knocked in 38. The FC United Select 2 U13 girls soccer team is scheduled to represent Illinois in the Regional II President’s Cup tournament starting Thursday in Overland Park, Kan. Teams from 10 states will be present at the tournament, which runs through Sunday. The FC United Select 2 U13 girls qualified by beating Elgin Kickers FC 7-5 in overtime on May 19 in Rockford. The game was tied 5-5 at the end of regulation. FC United’s Select 2 U13 Girls team has members from Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Deerfield and Lake Forest. …

Of the nearly two dozen players on the roster for this weekend’s baseball showcase at St. Charles North, few are like Hinsdale Central senior Jacob White. White is not playing travel baseball this summer and has not seriously considered baseball in college. That’s not the case for the rest of his West Suburban Conference teammates at the 16th annual Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament. Baseball showcase finds new suburban home

After 15 years, the Stevenson Showcase has moved. The brainchild of high school baseball promoter and former Hersey coach Harvey Foster has found a new home. His two-day showcase is officially known as the Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament, the premier exhibition for Chicago-area high school baseball talent each June. The previous site of the event, Stevenson became so associated as the host that players, college recruiters and major-league scouts simply called it the Stevenson Showcase. Those who consider the Catholic League the state’s premier football conference now have an even better argument. The 100-year-old conference isn’t standing pat in its second century, confirming on Monday the addition for football of five current Suburban Christian Conference members — including defending state champs Montini (Class 5A) and Aurora Christian (3A). Those schools were left looking for a new home after seven other SCC teams left to join the Metro Suburban Conference earlier this spring. New Trier alumna Chelsea Delaney led her Kenyon College women’s softball team to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament this season for the first time since 2006. The Kenyon Ladies finished the season with a 22-15 record and a 10-9 mark in conference play. Delaney, a Kenilworth native and sophomore third baseman, led her team with eight home runs, double the total of her next closest teammate. She also finished second on the team in batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.630). On May 28, the Scouts ended their season with an 8-4 loss to top-ranked New Trier in the quarterfinals of the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association A-Class playoffs. The girls on the Ultimate Gymnastics Level 5 team saved their best for last. At the Level 5 state meet held recently in Peoria, Lake Forest’s Gianna Pasquesi turned in Ultimate Gymnastics’ best all-around performance. She won the state vault title — scoring 9.30 — and took home a silver medal on balance beam (9.55). She also had top-10 finishes on both uneven bars and floor exercise, while her all-around score of 37.75 placed her fourth in the state in the Junior B age group. The Lake Forest rugby club captured a state championship for the second year in a row, defeating Fenwick 31-15 on the Chicago Blaze Rugy Club pitch May 27. The Harriers had advanced to the finals by walloping St. Rita 29-7 in the quarterfinals and knocking out Downers Grove 35-24 in a semifinal match. This is only the third time in Illinois high school rugby history that a team has repeated as state champion.
