Of the nearly two dozen players on the roster for this weekend’s baseball showcase at St. Charles North, few are like Hinsdale Central senior Jacob White. White is not playing travel baseball this summer and has not seriously considered baseball in college. That’s not the case for the rest of his West Suburban Conference teammates at the 16th annual Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament. They are hoping to attract plenty of interest from college recruiters or major-league scouts Friday and Saturday. White is the only baseball player from Hinsdale Central to get an invitation, but football is his primary sport. After 15 years, the Stevenson Showcase has moved. The brainchild of high school baseball promoter and former Hersey coach Harvey Foster has found a new home. His two-day showcase is officially known as the Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament, the premier exhibition for Chicago-area high school baseball talent each June. The previous site of the event, Stevenson became so associated as the host that players, college recruiters and major-league scouts simply called it the Stevenson Showcase. But after last year’s event, Stevenson officials were no longer interested in providing the site. Those who consider the Catholic League the state’s premier football conference now have an even better argument. The 100-year-old conference isn’t standing pat in its second century, confirming on Monday the addition for football of five current Suburban Christian Conference members — including defending state champs Montini (Class 5A) and Aurora Christian (3A). Those schools were left looking for a new home after seven other SCC teams left to join the Metro Suburban Conference earlier this spring. The new Catholic League football alignment, which takes effect for the 2014 season, will have four divisions, up from the current three. New Trier alumna Chelsea Delaney led her Kenyon College women’s softball team to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament this season for the first time since 2006. The Kenyon Ladies finished the season with a 22-15 record and a 10-9 mark in conference play. She also finished second on the team in batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.630). ORLAND PARK — The best of the best seniors met Thursday night at Sandburg to compete in the 2013 IHSLA All-Star Game. Putting numbers, stats and rivalries aside, it was all about connecting and reuniting with league rivals and teammates one last time. “It’s a great time, it’s great to meet all the guys in the league” said St. Viator’s Dan O’Malley, who led the Black Team to a 16-8 victory behind his hat trick to earn MVP honors. “We get to bond with each other during this time and this being the last game I’ll play (in high school) … ]]> Mon, 10 Jun 2013 14:41:50 -0500 http://lakeforest.suntimes.com/sports/20556425-455/omalley-lambert-earn-mvp-honors-at-ihsla-all-star-game.html http://lakeforest.suntimes.com/sports/20556425-455/omalley-lambert-earn-mvp-honors-at-ihsla-all-star-game.html <![CDATA[ Lake Forest eyes return to elite status ]]>

LAKE FOREST — It was a loss, but it was a loss that the Lake Forest’s boys lacrosse team will build on for nine months. On May 28, the Scouts ended their season with an 8-4 loss to top-ranked New Trier in the quarterfinals of the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association A-Class playoffs. A season that saw Lake Forest play six sophomores and five freshmen concluded with a competitive postseason performance against an experienced New Trier team. Afterward, the players were appropriately disappointed. Lake Forest coach Dan Maigler found their mood encouraging. “Not because they were down on themselves. BARRINGTON — If Lake Forest sophomores Carly and Kendall Hoke seem like they’re really similar, it’s because they’re twins. If they seem different, it’s because they’ve always done things their own way. Carly Hoke is the intense one, the fiery one, the one who more closely imitates the twins’ father, Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke, and their uncle, Michigan football coach Brady Hoke. Kendall Hoke is more reserved, a dancer-turned-star athlete who peruses the soccer field gracefully while her sister storms around like a thunderbolt. Sometimes the Hokes are the same. The Lake Forest rugby club captured a state championship for the second year in a row, defeating Fenwick 31-15 on the Chicago Blaze Rugy Club pitch May 27. The Harriers had advanced to the finals by walloping St. Rita 29-7 in the quarterfinals and knocking out Downers Grove 35-24 in a semifinal match. This is only the third time in Illinois high school rugby history that a team has repeated as state champion.
