Here’s a good sign. Lake Forest senior Thomas Durrett, who has been sidelined with a concussion, started and scored nine points in Tuesday’s 56-46 victory over visiting Deerfield. Durrett, who played 17 minutes, made two three-pointers for the Scouts who improved to 13-9. John Hayes scored a team-high 13 points for LF, while freshman Evan Boudreaux finished with 11 points and nine six rebounds. Creighton Titus also pulled down six rebounds. GIRLS GYMNASTICS: There was the expected as well as a couple minor surprises during Thursday’s Niles North sectional. Two-time defending state champion Carmel remained on target for another state title, winning the sectional with 151.760 points, while Stevenson mustered 146.875 points to finish as runner-up.

Highland Park’s boys basketball team got back on track on Tuesday. Led by Jake Norcia’s 17 points, the Giants defeated visiting Lake Forest Academy 54-51. The Giants (13-9, 4-4) received 12 points from Danny Dlugie, while Ross Chukerman finished with nine points and 14 rebounds. Josh Sterns scored five points to go along with seven assists. You didn’t need to be a prophet to see this coming. Lake Zurich has named David Proffitt as its new head football coach. Proffitt, who has been the Bears’ defensive coordinator for the past six years, will replace Bryan Stortz, who has taken a job at Rock Island. Lake Zurich went with experience. GIRLS SOCCER — Three players from the Eclipse Select Soccer Club, including Highland Park’s Zoe Redei and Lake Forest’s Ginny McGowan, have been called up to the U.S. U-15 National Team for a February camp. Kayla McCoy of Lincolnwood also got the nod. Redei will join the 97s/98s pool as a forward. McGowan, a defender, has been added to the 95s/96s pool. Michael Shipp and Ian Forlow, who helped the Lake Forest boys soccer team to an NSC championship this past fall, have made their college decisions. Shipp signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday and will join his brother Harrison at Notre Dame. Shipp, who was selected all-state in the fall, was named to the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-America team, and he was the NSCAA Senior Excellence Award recipient. A step in the right direction. At the recent NSC JV tournament, which was held at Lake Forest High School, the Scouts came away with four place-winners. Richard Daniels (182 pounds) and Ryan Wang (126) placed third, while Erik Wasser (132) and George Karkazis (138) finished fifth place. Lake Forest’s girls gymnastics team dined at a Rainforest Café after Friday night’s NSC Meet in Gurnee. It’s billed as a wild place to shop and eat. As the Scouts and their coach, Robin Straus, looked at menus, colorful fish — some beautiful, some odd-looking — flitted in a nearby gigantic aquarium. GIRLS HOCKEY — Highly populated. Six players on the girls hockey team at Lake Forest have been named to the 2012 Amateur Hockey Association Illinois (AHAI) All-State Team.
