Art fair: Parents, staff and community members are invited to attend the District 67 fourth grade Art Fair, taking place through April 5 at Gallery 300, 300 S. Waukegan Road, featuring artwork from students at Cherokee, Everett, and Sheridan. A community reception will be from 6-7 p.m. March 7. Lake Forest teacher earns Einstein Fellowship

Just as he was preparing to sing his students’ praises at parent-teacher conferences, Lake Forest Country Day School teacher David Thesenga was stunned to hear some praise of his own: He scored a spot as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship for 2013-14. Thesenga, 43, is the only Illinois winner and one of only two Midwest recipients.

Lake Forest students spur growth in ‘Read to Me’ buddy program

Students from Lake Forest Country Day School met for the last time this month with their partners from Forrestal Elementary School in Great Lakes for the last segment of the program called Sarah’s Dream: Read to Me! All teachers involved have reported improvements in literacy, say organizers from Lake County Cares.

Lake Forest District 67 recently gave layoff notices this spring to five elementary classroom teachers. The reason? Simple mathematics, administrators told a crowd of more than 100 concerned residents during a special meeting held April 11. Enrollment is on a steady decline, but he explanation didn’t appease some parents.

Students entertain senior citizens: The gym at the Upper Grade Center of the School of St. Mary was transformed on March 13 with St. Patrick’s Day decorations, to host the yearly event for senior members of the community of Lake Forest. It was the scene of the annual Senior Citizens Luncheon sponsored by the Woman’s Guild of the Church of St. Mary. Numerous grade levels were involved in the preparation of this special event. Youth art month The visual art department has been invited to participate in the Deer Path Art League’s Emerging artists show, held at the gallery in celebration of March’s National Youth Art Month. The work represented will consist of student artwork from kindergarten through high school from 15 schools in surrounding communities. St. Mary in Lake Forest gets auto show donation

The School of Saint Mary in Lake Forest was one of the 16 recipients recently awarded a $500 donation from the Chicago Automobile Trade Association and the Chicago Auto Show. School officials said the donation was a well-appreciated surprise, and Principal Vinni Biancalana thanked the Association. It will be presented to the Parents’ Club and included with money raised at this year’s annual gala for financial assistance for students who desire a Catholic education. Class registration The incoming LFHS Class of 2017 registration “Core Course Level Change Request Consultations/Adjustments,” meeting for the 2013-14 school year will be held 5-6:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the Library, LFHS East Campus, 1285 N. McKinley Rd., Lake Forest.
