Lake County Forest Preserve budget slimmer, but includes upgrades

Despite a slimmer budget for the fiscal year, the Lake County Forest Preserve is slated to undergo $17.7 million in improvements as part of a five-year blueprint for its facilities. Projects will connect the district’s extensive trail network and add amenities for preserve visitors.

The College of Lake County has put a hold on a paving contract after the Lake County News-Sun learned that the top bidder for the project is under indictment in Cook County. Alann Harris of Park Ridge-based North Suburban Asphalt Maintenance, which on April 29 was awarded a contract to sealcoat parking lots at the college’s Vernon Hills campus, was indicted in September on charges brought by Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

A proposal to build a bridge over railroad tracks at the south end of Middlefork Savanna in Lake Forest holds the key to bike trail connections throughout Lake County, but it will cost roughly $800,000. Some city officials have said during public meetings that they would be open to kicking in $50,000 in cash or in-kind services to help the project.
