It was the slide show of the 18-month-to-3-year-old students hard at work at Forest Bluff Montessori School in Lake Bluff that resonated most with some of the parents and educators in India. “It was a revelation as to how we prepare an environment for that age group,” Uma Shanker of India noted in an e-mail. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to bar members of Congress and their staff from using inside legislative information in personal stock trading. Members empowered presidents to veto discretionary-spending items providing that both houses of Congress then vote to approve of the rescissions. Members also required new rules for figuring the budgetary impact of federal loan programs. Senators, meanwhile, approved a federal aviation budget, and they advanced a bill to authorize federal road, bridge, transit and highway-safety programs through Sept. 30, 2013.

The bitter cold temperatures that hit the Chicago area over the weekend are expected to give way to snow Monday and then milder weather by the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to climb to 35 degrees on Monday, when there is an 80 percent chance of snow after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service’s website. About two inches of accumulation is possible by Tuesday morning. Twenty-five computers valued at nearly $20,000 were stolen from Everett School in Lake Forest sometime between 11 p.m. on Feb. 3 and 11:45 a.m. on Feb. 4. In addition to the computer equipment, $300 in petty cash was stolen from the school office, which was locked but the door was pried open and the office was ransacked. In all, the locked doors of 14 rooms were pried open. The perpetrators also took the time to draw male genitalia on a cabinet with a marker, leading police to believe that youths were involved, Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Glenn Burmeister said. …

The Speak Up Coalition voted on four priority reasons why it believes area teens are using marijuana. As a deacon at Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest, James Kenney baptized more than 500 babies into the Catholic faith and ministered to countless sick and elderly individuals for more than 30 years. The Lake Forest resident died Jan. 25. He was 78. Born and raised in Evanston, Kenney served in the U.S. Army then attended Lake Forest College, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1959.
