Acorns dropped from trees on a late-summer evening, as a party started at Grace Groner’s cottage home in Lake Forest on Sept. 6. Bill Marlatt and Bob Pasquesi, trustees of the Grace Elizabeth Groner Foundation, manned the grill, browning brats while Bob’s wife, Mary, created delicious desserts. Groner recipients and others shared stories of how they have benefited from their generous namesake. One was Camila Quinteros, who interned at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest and also enjoyed two architecture internships outside of Illinois. “The Grace Groner Foundation helped, and still helps, me with finding unique internships,” she said. …

Lake Forest Day celebrates veterans, holds carnival

Thousands braved the beating sun as the 104th annual Lake Forest Day Parade weaved through the streets of downtown last month. Nearly 100 groups marched up Western Avenue and over to West Park, including politicians, non-profit groups, baseball associations and schools. Among parade participants, BMO Bank/South Shore Drill Team won the Commanders Trophy, while CROYA of Lake Forest captured the Most Original Trophy. The parade theme, “Lake Forest Salutes Vietnam Veterans,” heartened many who knew that those returning from the lengthy and divisive war in the 1960s and 1970s had often not been properly treated. In architecture, the word “folly” does not denote foolishness as it does in everyday life. Instead, it refers to a “whimsical or extravagant structure built to serve as a conversation piece.” There was plenty to talk about as Lake Forest Preservation Foundation members and others enjoyed the “Garden Folly Wine Stroll,” where they explored the 1793 replica of Samuel McIntyre’s Derby summerhouse at 788 E. The Women’s Board of Catholic Charities of Lake County hosted their 23rd Annual Art of Caring Benefit, “Changing Lives,” on May 19 at the Knollwood Country Club in Lake Forest. This gala was attended by more than 220 guests and proceeds raised support Catholic Charities services in Lake County. Guests were welcomed by Rev. Monsignor Michael M. Boland, administrator, president and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago; Al and Mary Ann Moschner, honorary chair couple; and Debby Lambert, Women’s Board president. Squash is a game oft associated with private clubs. One rarely thinks of inner-city children playing the game. But the mission of METROsquash — a nonprofit with organizations in a number of big cities throughout the country — is to engage Chicago Public School students in both squash and academic instruction once the school day has ended.
