New Lake Forest Safety Town readies young grads for summer

The 80 graduates of Lake Forest’s new Safety Town program are ready to handle just about anything this summer. Thanks to the first weeklong camp held last week at the Gorton Community Center, the group of 5- to 7-year-olds graduated Friday with skills in water safety, bike riding and even how to how to deal with an unknown dog.

Lake County decision could allow religious center to open in Lake Forest area home

Following an eight-month battle with neighbors and a federal lawsuit, Sheehung “Erik” Sung received confirmation from Lake County that Maum Meditation House of Truth — a religion he has been practicing for two years — is, in fact, a religion. If he obtains proper permits, the county could allow a center to open in his home near Lake Forest.

State Rep. Drury leads criminal justice reform

In the final hours of the recent legislative session, the General Assembly approved a bill sponsored by State Rep. Scott Drury, D-58, of Highwood. The law aims to reduce the amount of wrongful convictions while also protecting police officers from false accusations of misconduct. The measure requires police officers to electronically record interrogations of suspects in custody for allegedly committing any of eight specified violent felonies, including predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault with a firearm.
