School of St. Mary first-graders make New Year’s resolutions

So this week is the time to ponder re-dedication, new promises, new commitments.
Of course, we’re talking about New Year’s resolutions. The vows we make at midnight on New Year’s Eve usually center around ridding ourselves of a bad habit, honing our skill at some sport or hobby, taking up a new interest, keeping away from temptation, even thinking that those we love could use some improvement as well.
The first-graders from Ms. Kristine Reed’s class at the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest have definitely given some thought about what they’d like to resolve to do for the New Year. I asked them what they’d like to make better for 2012, and here’s what they said:
Nora P.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to get better at reading. My New Year’s resolution for my sister MK is for her to be nicer to me.”
Ayden K.- “My New Year’s resolution is getting better at football.”
Connor B.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is being nicer to my family. My New Year’s resolution for my family is for them to be nicer to me.”
Britne N.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is writing neater. My New Year’s resolution for my Sister Bria is for her to run faster.”
Brady G.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to ride my bike faster. I would also like to make better LEGO sets.”
Eamon R.- “My New Year’s resolution is becoming better at baseball so that I can score more runs!”
Lilly C.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to become good at planting roses.”
Olivia G.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to get better at playing soccer.”
Brendan A.- “My New Years resolution for 2012 is to read more books and to become a better artist.”
Brendean L.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to write neater.”
Carolyn G.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to get better at reading.”
Anna M.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to act good at school all day.”
Justin P.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to get better at basketball.”
James S.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is to get better at playing soccer.”
Hannah C.- “My New Year’s resolution for 2012 is for me to be good for my parents. My New Year’s resolution for my brother Zachary is for him to also be good for my parents.”
Indeed, adults will probably commit to their resolutions for a day or so, maybe a week before breaking down in one way or another. I have a good feeling that these little ones will not only keep their own promises, they’ll do a great job of reminding their families of what they need to step up on for 2012.
Wishing you all a happy, healthy New Year!
