Debate team off to outstanding start

The team from St. Mary was off to a fast start with their first debate meet on Oct. 30. Under the direction of Margaret Tazioli, St. Mary students competed against six area school debate teams: Deerpath in Lake Forest, Woodland in Gurnee, Caruso in Deerfield, Edgewood in Highland Park and Bannockburn in Bannockburn. At the end of the debate, People’s Choice awards were awarded to outstanding debate participants, in which four SOSM students were among the nominees: Ben Hans, Caitlin Cummings, Isabella Mancini and Mark Rinaolo.

A relatively new club at St. Mary, this is their third year as part of the North Suburban Debate League. In the past, St. Mary students have been responsible for creating bills addressing what they saw were important and meaningful school, domestic and world issues. With the club’s enrollment doubling in size since last year, there has been a bounty of ideas to choose from, including the creation of a world charity, a need for a universal language, and a bill requiring those nations who play a significant part in the world economy to be required to balance their budget. The next debate scheduled for Dec. 10 at Deerpath Middle School.
