The Secondary Level students at Lake Bluff’s Forest Bluff School undertook a 15-day service and camping trip to YMCA Camp St. Croix in Hudson, Wis., in October.

The 14 students in the Montessori school’s seventh- and eighth-grade program cleared the camp’s fence line around a horse pasture a quarter mile in perimeter, then re-fenced the area with barbless wire, school officials said in a press release.

The students additionally added 50 seats to an amphitheater built by a previous class of Forest Bluff students. They camped in tents, and cooked their meals on propane stoves.

The adventure was one of three two-week trips each year that combine applied academics with physical work and supported independence. Students plan every element of the trips, from gasoline costs to food preparation, according to the press release.
