Steady voter turnout in Lake County

Election officials at Lake County polling places reported steady voter turnout for Tuesday’s primary election.
At the Lake County Central Permit Facility -- which includes Libertyville precincts 171, 172 and 176 -- 325 people had voted as of 12:15 p.m., according to polling site manager Amy McEwan.
“We’ve had a pretty steady flow all day,” said McEwan. “We’ve never had a time that we didn’t have at least a voter or two in the room. We had times when the voting booths were full but people didn’t have to wait.”
Ann Marie Higgins, site manager for the Mundelein Community Center polling place -- which covers Fremont precincts 116 and 119 -- said about 135 people had cast ballots at their polling place as of about 11:15 a.m.
“It’s been a very busy turnout since we’ve been here,” said Higgins. “We’ve never had an empty room since the polls opened at 6 this morning. We had a few people waiting in line at 6 this morning.”
Higgins believes one of the main factors driving turnout was the hotly contested Republican primary election for president, However, she said there was strong representation at the polls of both Democratic and Republican voters, based on the ballots that were requested by voters.
Libertyville resident Art Kleck, who voted at the Central Permit Facility polling place, said he always votes in elections but for him the biggest issue in this election was the presidential primary, where he voted for Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
“We want the strongest candidate that can win over Mr. Obama,” he said.
At the Mundelein Community Center polling place, Harold and Mary Hanson said they regularly vote in elections and they cast Democratic primary ballots. “I’m a very strong Obama supporter,” said Harold Hanson.
For some voters, local issues also played a factor. One Libertyville woman, who wished not to be identified, said she came out to vote against the Libertyville road referendum “because I don’t want my taxes going up anymore.”
