Lake Forest and Lake Bluff News Briefs: Waste collection rates to rise in village

Lake Bluff residents who receive a la carte waste collection services from Groot Industries will see a price increase of nearly 3 percent price starting for twice-weekly and or backdoor collections starting Feb. 1.
The new weekly backdoor and twice-weekly curbside fee is $12.53. Twice-weekly backdoor is $28.72 and white goods collection, $36.56.
The Lake Bluff Public Works Department maintains a free recycling facility at 640 Rockland Road seven days a week for village residents to dispose of regular recyclable items (same items disposed of during regular collections) at no extra cost.
This service is available to residents displaying a Lake Bluff vehicle sticker, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Bernie’s Book Bank reaches milestone
Bernie’s Book Bank, a Lake Forest-based nonprofit organization benefiting at-risk children, distributed its 500,000th book at Roy Elementary School in Northlake, Ill., on Jan. 18.
Founded in 2009, Bernie’s Book Bank serves more than 35,000 children annually in communities throughout Chicagoland. Each child receives a minimum of two bags of books every year until he or she completes sixth grade.

Bike master plan workshop Jan. 30
Lake Forest city staff will host a Bicycle Master Plan Workshop at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30 at the Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois in Lake Forest. The city is developing a Bicycle Master Plan in partnership with the village of Lake Bluff.

‘Sirens’ to open at Citadel
Feb. 3
Citadel Theatre of Lake Forest is staging the romantic comedy “Sirens” starring the husband and wife team of Ellen and Scott Phelps from Friday, Feb. 3 through Sunday, March 4 with performances at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 3 p.m. on Sundays; and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
This is the Chicago-area debut for the hit at the 2010 Humana Festival of New Plays.
Tickets are $35 for Thursday and Sunday performances and $37.50 for Friday and Saturday. Discounts for groups, seniors and students are available.
