LAKE FOREST —Students at Cherokee Elementary School will have one more thing to learn when they start school in September — the name of their new principal.
Lake Forest School District 67 announced on Wednesday that Kelly Jackson will lead Cherokee starting July 1. She is currently the eighth-grade assistant principal at Wilmette Junior High School.
With the Cherokee principal position filled, current principal Michelle Shinn will return to her role as principal of the district’s Sheridan Elementary School. Shinn has served as principal of both Cherokee and Sheridan during the past two years.
“What attracted us to Mrs. Jackson were her roles of increasing responsibility and her considerable success in each,” District 67 Superintendent Michael Simeck said in a district-issued press release.
Jackson worked in schools in Wilmette and East Grand Rapids, Mich., where she taught elementary and middle school Spanish and served as a world language curriculum coordinator.
Jackson earned her master’s degree in educational leadership at Western Michigan University and her bachelor’s in elementary education, Spanish and social studies at Calvin College in Grand Rapids.
The District 67 Board of Education unanimously approved Jackson’s appointment with an annual salary of $110,000 at its meeting on Feb. 26.
