VERNON HILLS — A registered sex offender faces jail time for allegedly posting a sex-based advertisement on Craigslist.

David Costello, 42, of 490 Bay Tree Circle, Vernon Hills, was charged Friday, Nov. 2, with violating sex offender registration.

According to police spokesperson Sharon Joseph, an officer was making a routine visit to Costello’s home when the advertisement was found open on a computer.

Joseph said sex offenders are required to report what websites they’re registered to or frequently use. Failing to report such activities is a felony punishable by at least a year of incarceration, Joseph said.

According to court records, Costello was originally charged with sexual abuse on Oct. 18, 2004 for allegedly soliciting sex from a 15-year-old child. At the time, Costello resided on the 500 block of Everett Road in Lake Forest.

He pled guilty in 2005 and was placed on probation, given 200 hours of community service and required to participate in a sex offender treatment program, according to court documents.
