Libertyville Boy’s Club treasurer gets jail for theft

A Libertyville man convicted of stealing about $66,000 from the Libertyville Boy’s Club was remanded into the custody of the Lake County sheriff Tuesday to begin serving a 30-day jail sentence.
Christopher Jacobsen, 44, was sentenced last week to serve 30 days in jail, 18 months of periodic imprisonment and 36 months of probation, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney James Newman said. Jacobsen came back to court Tuesday to begin his jail sentence.
Jacobsen was treasurer of the nonprofit Libertyville Boy’s Club that oversees the Libertyville Youth Football Program at Butler Lake Park. He stole about $66,000 during a period of about 14 months, Newman said.
During his trial, the thefts were characterized as loans, Newman said. Jacobsen has paid back about $4,000 of the stolen money and must pay about $61,000 of restitution, Newman said.
Jacobsen was a self-employed accountant and had volunteered to be treasurer for the club since February 2009. An audit revealed the theft, police had said.
Board members became suspicious after Jacobsen refused to bring financial records to monthly board meetings, police said. Jacobsen eventually brought the documents, but the board already had hired an accounting firm to do an audit, police said.
The audit showed that Jacobsen had written numerous checks to himself, police said.
