Updated: March 24, 2012 8:38AM

The City of Lake Forest is seeking civic-minded high school students who are residents of Lake Forest to serve on a city board during their senior year.

Appointed by the mayor in May, the students will work alongside other community adult volunteers on the Library Board and the Parks and Recreation Board.

Interested students should complete a Volunteer Profile Sheet, found at www.cityoflakeforest.com, or at City Hall, 220 E. Deerpath.

Applicants are required to submit a one-page essay explaining why they would like to serve and what benefits they and the City would derive from the experience. A letter of reference also is required.

Completed applications are due at City Hall on Friday, March 9.

LFC is set to host Literary Festival

The Lake Forest College Department of English is hosting its annual Lake Forest Literary Festival Feb. 27-29 at the college, located at 555 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest.

“I’m very excited by the diversity of the voices represented at this year’s festival, most of whom are concerned in some way with environmental writing or writing about place,” said Professor and Lit Fest organizer Josh Corey. “From the feminist ecopoetics of Brenda Iijima to the gonzo piscatorian Mark Spitzer to the contemporary fairy tales of Kate Bernheimer to the visionary environments of Ed Roberson, these writers all bring ethical and imaginative intensity to their work.”

Monday’s schedule (Feb. 27) includes readings by Tahitian artist and writer Rai a Mai at noon, poet Ed Roberson at 4 p.m. and memoirist and environmental prose writer Mark Spitzer at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, there will be a panel discussion on contemporary ecopoetics at noon, a reading by novelist Lucy Ferriss at 4 p.m. and readings by Elizabeth Gentry and Kate Bernheimer at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday’s events (Feb. 29) include a reading by poet Brenda Iijima at 4 p.m. and a keynote address by John Elder at 7:30 p.m.

Caucus party is coming up

The Lake Forest Caucus Annual Cocktail Party is an opportunity to meet the candidates for aldermen and to discuss the issues ahead. The event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Feb. 24 at The Atrium at Lake Forest Country Day School, 145 South Green Bay Rd., Lake Forest.

Cost is $50 per person. Call (847) 295-2766 for ticket information.
