Lake Forest Answer Man: Where’s a good spot for a weekend breakfast?

Updated: March 10, 2012 8:14AM

Lake Forest Answer Man is starving for questions:

This weekend, I want to go somewhere special for breakfast in Lake Forest. Is there anywhere you can suggest where my wife and I should visit? -- Howie Johnson

Oh boy, can the Answer Man help you here.

Lake Forest has some superb choices. Two ideas for Saturday: The Orange Bread French Toast or the sauteed chicken livers (if available) at Egg Harbor Cafe, 512 N. Western Ave. or -- believe it or not -- the freshly scrambled eggs cooked in a skillet in front of you at the McDonald’s restaurant at 884 S. Waukegan Road.

Egg Harbor Cafe Manager Bruce Jackson said the long-time spot has a breakfast special every day. One popular choice is the Orange Bread French Toast. It’s made with a pound cake and served with two eggs and a choice of bacon, ham or sausage (and is asked for even if not noted as the special).

For those of us who adore sautéed chicken livers, he offers them as a special on occasion. Indeed, he has an e-mail list of patrons who have requested they be notified when this special comes up so they can amble on over. The chicken livers are served as a side dish with two eggs, potatoes and an English muffin. The livers are sautéed with bacon, onions and mushrooms.

McDonald’s Restaurant Manager David Escobar said they are maybe the only member of the world-wide food chain offering freshly scrambled eggs for breakfast on Saturday mornings. Patrons order and select from additional ingredients like mushrooms, peppers, and/or bacon bits. Cooks scramble them (there are no special orders beyond scrambled).

“We’ve been doing it many years,” Escobar said.

On Sundays, check out The Grille on Laurel Restaurant & Bar, 181 E. Laurel Ave., which offers a brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (www.thegrilleonlaurel.com) or The Deer Path Inn, 255 E. Illinois Road, which offers a tasty champagne brunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (www.dpihotel.com).

Send you questions to orchardandmain@comcast.net and note whether it is a question for Lake Bluff or Lake Forest.
