The Women’s Board of The Field Museum raised more than $80,000 at its annual Women in Science Fellowship with an exceptional program and luncheon on Wednesday, May 30, 2012. This year’s event featured the remarkable designs of A.V. Shinde, renowned jewelry designer for legendary Harry Winston from the 1960s through the end of the century.

More than 400 guests attended this important fundraiser, which raises money to sponsor fellowships for women scientists at The Field Museum. The event began at 10:30 a.m. in the James Simpson Theatre with the viewing of a variety of rarely seen Indian artifacts from the Museum’s collections. A special video highlighted the scholarship for women scientists at the Field Museum and featured current and past Fellowship winners. Program speakers were Reema Keswani, expert on Indian jewelry and the only authorized biographer of A.V. Shinde, and Anthony Ledru, Global Vice President of Sales at Harry Winston Inc. An Indian-themed luncheon was served in the Museum’s Stanley Field Hall which was resplendent in tables set with bright orange, hot pink and beautiful flower arrangements.

This year’s Women in Science Fellowship winner is Field Museum researcher Charlene “Charlie” McCord. Her work incorporates the fields of anatomy, biomechanics, neuroscience, and molecular phylogenetics to study the evolutionary relationship of neuromuscular form and functioning in the Tetraodontiformes (pufferfish, triggerfish, and their relatives).
