Shedd Aquarium annual Society Soiree “Luminescence”: 6 p.m.-midnight, June 9, John G. Shedd Aquarium, 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Black tie. Event celebrates the aquarium’s timeless beauty, marveling over the original 1930s grace of the animal-inspired architectural details in marble, bronze and terra cotta sparkling throughout the original aquarium. ABC 7 Jim Gibbons 5K: June 14. he Wilmette-based Leukemia Research Foundation hosts its 18th Annual ABC 7 Jim Gibbons 5K in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. The event includes a 5K competitive run - the start of which is covered live on ABC 7 Chicago during the 6 p.m. news. There is also a 3K noncompetitive walk led by blood cancer survivors. The online registration fee is $35 for adult runners - $15 for children 14 and under. The Gibbons 5K experience is even more fun if one participates and raises money as part of a team. Catholic Charities “A Day at the Races at Arlington Park”: June 24. The event returns to the Governor’s Room. The Governor’s Room features outstanding panoramic views of the entire track, including the homestretch and the finish line. In addition, guests will have easy access to a shaded patio area from which the sights and sounds of the track can be thoroughly enjoyed. The event begins at noon, and post time is at 1 pm. The Greater Chicago Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation “Stepping Out to Cure” Scleroderma walk: June 24, beginning at the Highland Park Downtown Metra Parking lot. Registration at 7:30 a.m.; walk starts at 9 a.m., rain or shine. 10th annual walk. Scleroderma is a chronic, often progressive, autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own body. From calendar items and invitations (by mail or e-mail) I decide which events to cover. [Full disclosure: I like fashion, so I hit more fashion shows and shopping events than galas] Sometimes I assign Trend columnists to various events, but many times, they receive their own invitations.

Since there are more events on the social calendar than we can possibly attend, chairwomen need to provide a post-event press release and high-resolution photographs (with full names and hometowns) of guests. Please include your photographer’s name so we can give proper credit.
