Family Friendly: Hallowfest takes over the Chicago Botanic Garden

A garden of spooky delights awaits families.
The Chicago Botanic Garden’s HallowFest will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Oct. 26-27, and 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 at the 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe.
“We’ve added activities for little critters in the library — the ones under 3,” said Claire Plunkett, coordinator of visitor events and programs. “We’re going to do Critter Olympics and some sensory boxes.”
Children of all ages will enjoy face painting and a ride on the Howlin’ Express, a 15-minute journey around the garden. There will be family entertainment on two stages — a comedy magician on one and Rob Carmichael on the other. “He does a live show-and-tell of amphibians, reptiles and birds of prey,” Plunkett said.
There will also be fortune tellers, a carved pumpkin gallery, ghost trains in the Model Railroad Garden and complimentary kettle corn.
Tickets are $14 in advance for members, $17 for nonmembers, $3 more at the door.

HIT THE HAY
Surprises await around every bend during the Haunted Hayride, 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Sunset Woods Park, 1801 Sunset Road, Highland Park. Tram rides run from the football field every 15 minutes until 9 p.m. There will be music and entertainment while you wait and treats will be sold. The event is best for ages 7 and older. Tickets are $3.

Free fun awaits at Boo Bash, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Northfield Community Center, 401 Wagner Road, Northfield. There will be carnival games, a balloon artist, craft projects, treat bags and refreshments at this event presented by the Northfield Branch Library.

WEAR A COSTUME TO COURT
There will be Halloween arts and crafts projects, a costume parade, costume contest and creepy family photo station at Northbrook Court’s free Spooky Halloween Party, 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in the lower level near Macy’s, 2171 Northbrook Court, Northbrook. Your whole family can learn the choreography from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and then participate in a group performance.
