2 men steal metal shopping carts from busy Lake Forest store lot

Lake Forest police are looking for two men that a witness saw load several shopping carts into a pick-up truck and drive away during a busy Saturday morning grocery-shopping rush.

The witness described the two as men between the ages of 30 and 40 who were observed putting an undetermined number of carts in the back of the pickup in the middle of a busy store parking lot in the 800 block of North Western Avenue.

The vehicle, described as a blue, older model pickup truck with wood cargo rails on the truck bed, was last seen headed northbound on Western Avenue.

Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Karl Walldorf said metal shopping carts, valued at some $150 each, can be sold for scrap metal.

“One of the things we do is keep up communication with a lot of the recycling yards around us,” he said. “Many yards won’t accept carts without a letter from the company they came from.”

Anyone who has information on the shopping cart theft should contact Detective Kevin Zelk at ZelkK@cityoflakeforest.com.
