New Weeden Terrace consecrated at Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest

The Jane and Mike Weeden Terrace at The Church of the Holy Spirit was consecrated July 20 to honor the memory of the long-time Lake Forest residents and parishioners.

“We were blessed by their presence,” said Rob Krebs, a church member involved in the terrace naming. “This is a perfect way to celebrate their contributions and what the two of them meant to this church.”

The Weedens lived in Lake Forest for nearly 30 years and were devoted church members, with Jane serving as chairperson of the Altar Guild and Mike serving several years as church warden.

The consecration, led by Rev. Wendy Lane and Rev. Sarah Odderstol, culminated a year-long renovation of the church to make it more accessible to individuals with disabilities and more environmentally friendly.

The new terrace replaces a set of stairs that led to the church’s main entrance and serves as a gathering space outside.

“We wanted to be thoughtful of the needs of those who had trouble with stairs while also being sensitive about the historic character of the original church,” architect Thomas Rajkovich said.

Rajkovich designed the new church terrace after studying similar structures at churches throughout the United States and England.

“It’s very common in English hall churches for there to be some sort of paved terrace area where people gather before and after services,” Rajkovich said.

The church renovation project also included a new landscape design.

Local landscape architect Craig Bergmann describes the new design as “simple, honest, low-maintenance and appropriate.”

“I think it will be a nice place for someone to sit and contemplate,” Bergmann said.

The church’s parking lot was redesigned to distribute rainwater more evenly and reduce the footprint on the earth, according to Rajkovich.

“Stewardship generally means not only being good shepherds for the people in the congregation, but also the rest of creation,” he said.

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest was founded in 1902.
