Special Olympics spotlight: Alex Garcia

This week’s Lake County Special Olympics spotlight is Alex Garcia, 19, of Waukegan. Garcia has been involved in Special Olympics for eleven years and enjoys participating in basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball and track and field.

Q. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A. Listening to music.

Q. Is there a professional athlete or other role model that you look up to?

A. Papi (Dad).

Q. How old were you when you first got involved with Special Olympics?

A. 8 years old.

Q. What was your first event like?

A. Fun!!

Q. What is your favorite event to participate in?

A. Basketball. Fun to run, pass, shoot.

Q. What is your favorite Special Olympics memory?

A. Being presented with a medal. Makes me feel important.

Q. How has Special Olympics changed your life?

A. Helps me to be more independent.

Q. What future events are you excited about?

A. Basketball.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to add?

A. I always wanted to go to college and this is my opportunity to “go to college”.
