Brad Hopfinger holds off challengers to earn Illinois Open title

It’s been a good month for the University of Iowa men’s golf team in the state of Illinois.

Last week, rising sophomore Raymond Knoll won the Illinois State Amateur at Cantigny Golf in Wheaton. On Wednesday, Brad Hopfinger, an Iowa graduate, finished first the Illinois Open at The Glen Club in Glenview.

Hopfinger, a 25-year-old professional out of Lake Forest, shot a 1-under 71 in the final round to post 6-under 210 for the 54-hole tournament. Hopfinger edged out Oswego’s Travis Johns by one stroke for his first Illinois Open victory and second as a pro.

“Every win feels good, and this win is right there with my first one,” said Hopfinger, who scored a victory on the Gateway Tour in 2012. “More than anything, this win gives me confidence going forward with the rest of this year.”
