Quick turn sends FC United U16 team to nationals

Way back in February — months before the FC United U16 Select girls soccer team won the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II championship to advance to nationals, which begin on Tuesday — coach Craig Snower decided on an aggressive course of action.

To prepare for regionals, Snower concluded that FC United would reconvene on the Monday after the high school season concluded. The girls would spend that practice and several ensuing practices getting back to peak form and condition with some of the most grueling training sessions of the season.

“It was basically an hour and 45 minutes of non-stop work,” Snower said. “There’s risk in doing it [like that] — we could easily go too hard and they could break down, physically and/or mentally. But they didn’t, and so far it’s paid off.”

The turnaround from high school season to club season was quick for everybody, but especially for the girls on Lake Forest and New Trier. The Scouts and Trevians won the Class 2A and Class 3A state titles, respectfully, on June 7.
