Larry Lilja gives Lake Forest a lift in weight room

He doesn’t look or move like a man of 60. His steps are much too quick, his waist much too thin.

In fact, as Larry Lilja maneuvers around the Lake Forest High School West Campus weight room on a warm July afternoon, barking out pithy instructions to a roomful of football players, any observer might think he could be the one pushing up plated iron bars.

“He’s still in such great shape, it’s scary,” Scouts senior Jack Traynor said. “You walk in you are like, ‘Wow.’”

Since June 2011, Lilja has served as the Lake Forest football program’s strength and conditioning coach. Over those three seasons, the Scouts have won 26 games, including six in the postseason. It’s the school’s most successful stretch in a quarter century.
