Man killed by freight train was crossing pedestrian walkway

Police are still investigating the death of a man who was struck and killed by a northbound freight train near the West Lake Forest Train Station on Waukegan Road around 7:50 p.m. on Thursday, June 19.

The unidentified man was dead when first responders arrived on the scene, according to Lake Forest police.

The man was crossing the tracks at the pedestrian crossing some 50 yards north of the train station when he was struck.

He was dropped off in the train station commuter parking lot by a co-worker, who was still in the lot when the Canadian Pacific freight train stopped after striking the pedestrian, police said.

Metra Police is handling the case and did not immediately return phone calls for information Friday morning.

The Lake County Coroner might release the victim’s identity later today, Lake Forest police said.

All Metra trains on the Milwaukee District / North Line were temporarily halted after the incident, Metra officials said Thursday evening. Service resumed around 9:30 p.m.
