Lake County Board District 13 was a tight squeeze, as Democrat Sandra Hart edged out Republican David Barkhausen 53.2 percent to 46.8 percent.
“I ran a hard race and did everything I could, but I congratulate Sandy Hart on her superb campaign,” Barkhausen said. “This win is definitely a feather in her cap.”
Hart, a Lake Bluff Park Board commissioner since 2005, campaigned on lowering property taxes and making the county more friendly to employers.
“The best part of my campaign was going door-to-door, meeting new people and learning of their needs,” Hart said. “I’m excited to bring county government to them.”
Barkhausen, a state representative from 1981 through 1982 and a state senator from 1983 through 1997, advocated for Lake County to find cost-cutting measures that also improved service. He also supported efforts to widen Route 120 and extend Route 53.
The political veteran noticed a startling trend while watching election results unfold Tuesday night.
“I see a Democratic trend across Lake County and am discouraged from a Republican point of view,” Barkhausen said. “Republicans will still have the majority on the county board, but on most issues the party line doesn’t matter.”
Barkhausen said it was highly unlikely he would run for office in future elections.
