LAKE BLUFF — Grab a cup, pick a flavor, choose your toppings, weigh and pay.
That’s LuLu’s way at the new self-serve frozen yogurt shop overlooking the Village Green in Lake Bluff that quickly has become a meeting hub for tweens, teens, college students, families and adults alike since it first opened Oct. 2.
Founded by Tammy and Reggie Ash of Lake Bluff, LuLu’s Frozen Delights offers what the owners believe are the best products they could find. Judging by the customers crowding the 1,100-square-foot store on a recent Lake Bluff schools early release day, they picked a winning combination.
“The best yogurt in the country, bar none, is made in the middle of Arkansas,” Reggie said. It’s a discovery he and Tammy made just days after deciding on July 29 that the community needs a frozen yogurt shop.
The two drove down to Honey Hills Farms in August to meet the owner, view the manufacturing process and taste a lot of yogurt.
“We had to make sure the yogurt we were going to sell in our store was a product we could stand behind,” Tammy said.
At LuLu’s, customers fill their cups with their own combination of 12 yogurt flavors paired for a single flavor or a blend of two.
“We’ve switched out some flavors four times since we opened and moved some around,” said the owners’ son Alex Meyer, who also works in the new family business.
Current flavors include French vanilla and espresso, which can be blended to create a latte yogurt, and old-fashioned peanut butter and cookies ‘n cream, which LuLu’s calls a peanut butter sandwich.
“We’ll always have our standards that we’re never going to get rid of — chocolate, vanilla, strawberry — and sea salt caramel pretzel isn’t going anywhere. It’s really popular,” Tammy said.
A variety of toppings changes daily and can include fresh berries, candy bar chunks, crumbled cookies and pretzels.
“It depends on my mood,” said Tammy.
And there’s always caramel and Ghirardelli chocolate sauce, whipped cream and sprinkles to top it all off.
Since opening, LuLu’s menu has expanded to include coffee by a Lake Bluff resident and donuts made fresh daily by a Lake Forester.
The shop offers free Wi-Fi and a variety of seating options, including a window counter bar, tables for four and a pair of couches for larger groups.
