LAKE FOREST — Her yen for golf landed Chloe Morrissey, a fifth-grader at Lake Forest Country Day School, on the green as a standard bearer at the 2012 Ryder Cup.
It was an unforgettable afternoon for the 10-year-old who hopes to become a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association some day.
“I have a huge passion for golf. It’s the thing that I do,” she said.
To qualify for the honor of displaying the score to the gallery during the Ryder Cup celebrity round on Tuesday, Sept. 25, Morrissey had to meet academic requirements — she’s on the A/B honor roll — and she had to write an essay on why she wanted to be a standard bearer.
One reason Morrissey enjoyed the experience so much was the opportunity to watch a professional golf tournament up close and the chance to be near so many professionals in the sport she loves so much, she said.
“I started golfing at 5 years old,” she said. “It all started because I got a cute set of little pink golf clubs for my 5th birthday.”
From her first swing, she was hooked, said her mom, Adelah Morrissey.
“We’ve had coaches tell us she’s a natural and she should stick with it,” she said.
That’s one reason Chloe wanted to serve at the Ryder Cup, but it also had something to do with the celebrities, she admits. Her group included Justin Timberlake and Bill Murray.
“I’ve never met a celebrity in person before,” Chloe Morrissey said.
Her teacher at LFCDS, Jessica Hill, is not surprised Morrissey was chosen to participate.
“She’s a good student and she’s dedicated,” Hill said. “She just does a really great job.”
For Morrissey, the afternoon confirmed her golf pro aspirations.
“I knew that this was going to be an amazing experience,” she said, “and it was.”
