Close your eyes and think back to the 1980s. Do you remember the fashion trends of that decade? Or should I rephrase that and ask, do you want to remember those fashions?

Well, ready or not, here they come. This season, kids’ fashions are taking a flashback to the ’80s.

The 2012 versions are more understated and current with today’s trends. The oversized shoulder pad jackets are taken down a notch with the puffed shoulder. Acid wash tight jeans are replaced by color washed skinny jeans. And oversized tops worn with leggings have been updated to chunky sweaters over skinny jeans.

The huge ornament earrings of the ’80s are now called statement earrings. Bangles are still bangles but more colorful, and the Doc Martens of the past are the rugged booties of today.

Sue Tannura, co-owner (along with Rachel Pratt) of My Sister Kate in Hinsdale, commented that their store carries children’s clothing lines like Little Marc Jacobs, Joe’s Jeans and Ella Moss, which play up the ’80s trends. Likewise, Vintage Charm in La Grange has seen teens flock to the patterned jeans of the brand Free People, as well as statement earrings and bangles.

For now, these items remain mainly kids’ trends. Parents are advised to proceed with caution!
