Electricity consortium announces summer savings of $2.8M

Updated: August 17, 2012 8:08PM

The North Shore Electricity Aggregation Consortium has announced that customers across eight communities have saved more than $2.8 million on their electric bills during the months of June and July.

The savings is the result of an agreement between the communities of Deerfield, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Northbrook, Park Ridge and Skokie to purchase electricity from a supplier other than Commonwealth Edison. Following successful referendums in each community last spring, consortium entered into an agreement with MC Squared Energy Services, LLC to provide electricity supply services to residents and business owners within each community for the next three years.

According to the consortium it is anticipated that over the next year customers will save more than $25 million in electricity costs.

Jennifer Maltas, assistant to the village manager of Deerfield and a consortium spokeswoman, said the savings are shared by more than 71,000 residential customers and more than 3,200 commercial customers. The savings for each individual customer varies depending on the amount of electricity each uses, she said.

June-July savings across each of the eight municipalities adds up to:

• $615,900 for customers in Highland Park.

• $600,900 in Northbrook.

• $448,700 in Skokie.

• $334,926 in Deerfield.

•$318,300 in Lake Bluff.

• $220,900 in Park Ridge.

• $217,000 in Glencoe.

• $77,800 in Lake Bluff.

The North Shore Electricity Aggregation Consortium also reported that residents have received phone calls of other energy suppliers representing themselves as the consortium’s provider. Though customers still receive electric bills from ComEd, the electricity provider is now MC Squared. The consortium is advising residents that it only communicates through official an letterhead and does not make phone calls to solicit business.

Anyone with concerns about phone calls they have received is advised to contact the Illinois Commerce Commission at 1-800-524-0795.
